A friend of mine who was a photographer went out on day-old ice just before Christmas. Unfortunately he was too focused on taking the perfect picture of the sunset and fell through the ice. The Police found him in the hole in the ice for five hours later. It was too late. His and your story may serve as a wake-up call for us.
